Norwegian Accents

There is much more to learning how to speak Norwegian than just studying structure and grammar rules and building an extensive Norwegian vocabulary. In order to communicate truly effectively, particularly with native speakers in the context of the country, you will need to gain an understanding and grasp of Norwegian accents. These accents are applied on the written language so that they can be translated into the spoken use of the Norwegian language. Having a handle on these accents will allow you to clarify the meaning and context of the words when they are spoken and provide you with the ability to speak the language with authority and confidence.

Norwegian accents are applied in two different dialects. There are many different ways that these dialects are used, but it is through the accent and tone that they are differentiated. One sometimes difficult aspect of understanding these dialects is that sometimes the written accent marks that are applied to the language will indicate which dialect is being used, there are some instances in which this is not the case. Only the spoken application and context will indicate the dialect, and therefore the actual meaning of the word.

Your Norwegian lessons will have segments dedicated to instructing you on the accents of the language. This means that you will participate in exercises and practice that will help you to identify the accent marks as well as give you the understanding of how to apply these accents appropriately in actual usage. For many people, however, this will not necessarily be enough to establish a real grasp of such accents. There are other ways that you can further your learning and give you a better ability to use them as needed.

One of the best ways that you can learn Norwegian accents is simply by listening to the language. You can accomplish this by finding a good Norwegian podcast or finding opportunities to communicate with, or at least listen to conversations between, native speakers. Whenever possible you should supplement this listening with a good Norwegian dictionary or transcript so that you can visualize the accents while hearing them spoken so that you will have a true understanding of their application.
